Cross-country skiing and alpine paradise Seefeld

Seefeld Plateau

Uniquely beautiful

Favorable climate, impressive scenery. While the beauty of the Seefeld Tirol region was previously only known to insiders, it gained worldwide fame as the venue for the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck in 1964 and 1976.

In total, the Winter Olympics have been held here three times. Other winter sports championships, such as the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 and 2019, were also held in the region. The snowboarding community also discovered the Seefeld region. The Air & Style Snowboard Contest, which is widely known in snowboarding circles, was held on the Seefeld Plateau from 2000 to 2004. Even the FIS Nordic Combined World Cups have been held regularly in Seefeld Tirol since 2003.

Olympic Games in Seefeld

The history of the region impresses

The Seefeld region has already made history several times in sporting terms. Seefeld has twice hosted the Winter Olympics in the disciplines of cross-country skiing and Nordic combined. The Winter Youth Olympic Games were held here once. The Olympics in Seefeld are therefore almost a tradition. And the Nordic World Ski Championships have also been held in Seefeld twice.

For the first time, the Games were opened with the Olympic flame in Innsbruck in 1964. The Winter Olympics also returned to Innsbruck/Seefeld in 1976 and once again attracted thousands of enthusiastic fans to the region.

Secret Olympic champion

Ski pioneer Toni Seelos

Ski legend Anton „Toni“ Seelos (1911 - 2006) is considered one of the most famous children of the Seefeld region. The Austrian ski racer and ski coach shaped alpine skiing like no other of his time. As a four-time ski world champion, he fundamentally changed the slalom by replacing the traditional stem turn with the parallel turn. Unfortunately, he was denied Olympic success as he was not allowed to compete in the Winter Games as a professional ski instructor. So he only started in Garmisch as a preliminary runner - and was promptly 6 seconds faster than the best runner and Olympic champion!
